I like being able to wear a sweater and boots and other winter paraphernalia. I like the beauty, the soothing sound, and the warmth of a crackling fireplace. Even though chili can, technically, be eaten at any time of the year, the best time for enjoying a steaming bowl of chili with yummy cheese and crackers is on a freezing cold winter day. And then there are the sun’s rays sparkling off gleaming white mounds of snow – magnificent!
So, I really do love winter . . . for one day! One day only! Then I want it to be warm outside again – fast.
I do not want to deal with snow packed up around the car and the house doors. I do not want to deal with what it feels like – or is like – to walk or drive when we have major ice storms or to deal with what happens after snow melts and then refreezes.
Christmas 2009 was the first time – ever – that I didn’t spend Christmas with my children and grandchildren. We were all stuck in separate houses – like many, many others in the area. We were stuck for days! And Christmas wasn’t the only time that happened during that winter.
Thank goodness I had stocked up at the grocery store – coffee – chocolate – mmmmm!
Christmas 2010 had very acceptable weather – so that was great! But, now, we’re going through the winter torture again. Schools and many businesses had to close Tuesday, yesterday, and today. The temperature here is supposed to get down to 0 degrees this morning – 0 degrees!
Thank goodness I had stocked up at the grocery store – coffee – chocolate – mmmmm!
Several years ago, a student gave me a wooden decorative hanger for the front door. It had been packed away, but I found it in a box and decided to put it on my door for winter.
Even though I don’t love winter, it was such a thoughtful gift – and it’s so easy for me to be bought – Sigh. . .
Since 2nd daughter knows how much I hate winter, she suggested that I revise the plaque to show my true feelings.
This is a mantra that repeats in my head over and over during this season:
“I Hate Winter! . . . I Hate Winter! . . . I Hate Winter! . . . I Hate . . .”
And even this summer, when the temperature climbs higher than 100 degrees and stays there for days and days and days, I will still have the same mantra –
“I Hate Winter! . . . I Hate Winter! . . . I Hate Winter! . . . I Hate . . .”
I love winter when it is really a winter – not like we had in Beaumont, Texas where I lived when I was a young girl: 40 degrees and raining! Ugh! Northeast winters appeal to me – lots of snow and cold days to really enjoy that chili and homemade vegetable soup – although I do enjoy those year round, you are right – nothing like a cold snowy day to bring out the best in them! The only thing I do not like is ICE and ICE storms! I want my power to stay on, and don’t like extended power outages. However, I have found that the farther you go North, the less likely you are to have them. Ice storms are most likely to come in warmer areas that hover between rain/snow temps, and then get really cold to freeze the rain. UGH!
Besides, as my Mom used to say, “I would prefer to have cold weather over hot. After all, when it’s cold I can always put more clothes on. When it’s hot, well, there is only so much I can take off!”
Hope the weather you desire is on the way! Cheers! Keep posting! I love hearing from you! You sound as feisty as ever! 😀
I know many people who prefer cold over hot. My problem is that the icy wind stabs right through me no matter how many layers I put on.
I’m glad you think I’m sounding feisty again – Hurray! 🙂
Hi Dawn…I don’t mind winter but then our winters are not as extreme as yours.
I can’t handle the extremely hot weather we are having so,for my part, roll on winter!
I won’t join Cindy in raising a glass of wine( I MUST be sick!)
I’m so sorry you’re still not feeling well, granny! I hope you get over it soon.
I LOATHE winter and don’t know how you manage to survive in your climate. I’m terribly sympathetic to you and will immediately go and drink a glass of wine in solidarity with your plight!
Thank for the sympathy and the solidarity. I think a glass of wine would definitely be appropriate at this point. 🙂
I, too, have a love/hate relationship for winter. I think if our part of the country was better equipped for the foul weather, I might like it a bit better. Being ‘snowed in’ is ok for a day or two….but then I’m ready to get out and make sure the world is still spinning!
I know! I’m going a little stir crazy. And I just looked outside – it’s snowing again! Aaaaghghhghgh!!
