Birthday Card Trend

When first divorced twenty years ago
I tried to buy a birthday card
From just me for my daughter.

But everywhere I looked I found
That all the good ones said the same –
“With love, from Dad and Mother.”

As years have passed, I’ve seen a change.
And now, to my dismay and shock –
Most cards are very different.

They say “My Daughter” or “From me”
And speak of rearing singly as
Routine and even reverent.

More families have become without
A Mom and Dad together who
Can share the daily raising.

But that it’s now so commonplace
And greeting cards confirm the trend –
I find sadly amazing.

Sad for the reason for the change…..but glad they are meeting the “card” needs of families today.
